C3: STUDIO RESIDENCY

SHARITA TOWNE
July 29 - October 1, 2016

c3:initiative is pleased to host artist Sharita Towne as a studio resident while she prepares for her exhibition, Our City in Stereo, at Newspace Center for Photography.

See public program listings below.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Our City in Stereo uses the old medium of stereographs to investigate what’s happening on the ground in what’s been called the most gentrified city of the century—Portland. Stereo views, an early form of three-dimensional photography, gave viewers a sense of “being there” in a photograph. Our City in Stereo looks to use that sense of depth and “being there” as an entry point to figurative depths. Photographs will include contentious sites of Portland displacement and a spectrum of portraits of those who have been displaced from gentrification to those that believe it does not exist. The project will rely heavily on community collaboration and site-specific conversation.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Our past burdens give shape to what worlds we may build, now and in the future. As an artist Sharita Towne‘s interests lie in unpacking these inherited struggles, in understanding the mold they imprint on our present selves, and in affording collective catharsis. With this in mind, through collaboration, research, education, stereo-photography, printmaking, bookmaking, video, and socially engaged art projects, Towne has pursued work at concentration camp memorials in Germany, at Saharawi Refugee camps in Algeria, in Brazil, Chile, Spain, Palestine, gentrifying cities like Portland, OR, in schools, print shops, museums, neighborhoods, and within her own family.

ABOUT NEWSPACE CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

Newspace connects and inspires people by offering an accessible place to create, learn, and engage in the evolution of the image. Newspace’s exhibition program explores the diverse ways in which artists create images and the topics they investigate, and further serves as a platform for discussion. With our programs, Newspace strongly advocates that the image is uniquely positioned to reflect, communicate, teach, propose, and challenge the state of our culture and surroundings.

We at c3:initiative humbly acknowledge that our programming is being held on the traditional lands of the Multnomah, Kathlamet, Clackamas, bands of Chinook, Tualatin Kalapuya, Molalla and many other Tribes who made their homes along the Columbia (Wimahl) and Willamette (Whilamut) rivers.

We take this opportunity to offer respectful recognition to the Native communities in our region, and to those who have stewarded this land throughout the generations. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies of violence, displacement, migration, and settlement that bring us together here today. We recognize the continual displacement of Native people by the United States and are committed to working to dismantle the ongoing effects of this settler colonial legacy. Please join us in respecting the contributions Indigenous peoples have, and continue to make to our community, country, and world.
