c3: Project Incubator
c3:initiative selected Working Library (a project by Rory Sparks and Laura O'Quin) as the 2017-2018 project incubator. Working Library was selected from a rigorous pool of applicants to independently occupy the c3 incubator space on the corner of North Chicago Ave and Lombard St.. The project was home to a community amassed library, studio-run printing press, and bindery.
The Working Library is a place to engage the concept of a library through two threads; a site of production and a program for participation—rooted in curiosity and unexpected interconnections.
Launched in March 2016, we set out to construct, populate, and activate a library in conversation with the community.
One branch of the Working Library is a project space envisioned as an open and flexible structure that allows for multiple representations and interpretations of what a library is, and what it can be.
Another branch is the Working Library Residency in collaboration with c3:initiative. The residency will produce artist projects dealing in themes of publication, archive, and collection through the lens of artists of color.
Together we have set out to create a social space which is in a constant state of becoming. We honor the tradition of the library as a place of public voice, where visitors borrow from and contribute to the circulation of ideas and objects.
