Picture

LETHA WILSON
JANUARY 2017

c3:initiative is pleased to host artist Letha Wilson as a studio resident while she prepares for her exhibition at Center for Contemporary Art & Culture, PNCA.

Exhibition on view at  PNCA  |  January 17 - March 11, 2017

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Center for Contemporary Art and Culture, PNCA is pleased to present Letha Wilson in her first West Coast solo exhibition featuring a brand new body of work. This exhibition, Sunlight and Shadows, is the result of a collaboration with c3:initiative, Sou'Wester, and the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture at PNCA. Together we are bringing the NY-based artist and sculptural photographer Letha Wilson to the Northwest for two extended visits. In the summer of 2016, Wilson traveled to Eastern Oregon and the Sou’Wester lodge in Seaview, WA as artist-in-residence, which served as her home base as she scouted the area, taking photographs and gathering materials.

She will return to Portland in January 2017 as artist-in-residence at c3:initiative and PNCA, during which she will make use of our institutions' facilities and engage with our artist community to create new photo-based sculptures that react to the Northwest landscape and to the architecture of the Center's 511 Gallery.

We at c3:initiative humbly acknowledge that our programming is being held on the traditional lands of the Multnomah, Kathlamet, Clackamas, bands of Chinook, Tualatin Kalapuya, Molalla and many other Tribes who made their homes along the Columbia (Wimahl) and Willamette (Whilamut) rivers.

We take this opportunity to offer respectful recognition to the Native communities in our region, and to those who have stewarded this land throughout the generations. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies of violence, displacement, migration, and settlement that bring us together here today. We recognize the continual displacement of Native people by the United States and are committed to working to dismantle the ongoing effects of this settler colonial legacy. Please join us in respecting the contributions Indigenous peoples have, and continue to make to our community, country, and world.
